OUR STORY

Founded in 2011 by owner & curator Melissa Gonzales…

Vintanthro Modern & Vintage is a vintage boutique, gathering space, lifestyle store, gift shop, and so much more. Our team scours New England, the Deep South, and the Midwest from time to time to bring you the very best clothing, shoes, and accessories from times past, along with modern gifts. We are currently in our third brick-and-mortar location but were previously known for our vintage pop-up shops around New Haven and for the first roving vintage shop (the Vintanthromobile) in the state of Connecticut.

What we stand for

Vintanthro is animated by the core values of sustainability, wearability, diversity, and affordability. We hate waste. We think costumes should be left for plays and parties. We can’t tell you who a “typical” vintage shopper is — and we don’t want to. We definitely don’t do exclusivity. After all, vintage items don’t need to be expensive or hard to find to be cool, wearable, or well-made. And you know what? There’s no mystery behind vintage fashion that we want to guard: it really is just awesome clothes, shoes, bags, and accessories from the past getting a second (or third, or fourth) life.

In short, we’re not myth-makers. We’re not trying to sell you an unattainable lifestyle, and if you’re looking for artfully unfocused, Instagram-filter-abusing photographs of wistful 20-year-olds in fields of daisies at sunset, you have come to the wrong place. We don’t care about fantasies. We care about you, and we’re pretty sure that most of our customers don’t spend their lives in backlit fields of daisies. You work. You go to school. You volunteer. You take action. You play. You go out. You travel. You give. You raise your kids … or your cats. You do what you do. Our only hope is that sometimes you might find a reason to wear vintage items while doing it.

And sure, we love vintage, but so does every other vintage retailer on the planet. That’s not really what counts. What counts is our knowledge of vintage eras, textiles, and the evolution of style. What counts are the products we offer to you. What counts is our customer service. What counts is you being able to find your size in our inventory. What counts is feeling included. What counts is the smile you have when you make a purchase from us.

We carry shoes up to women’s US size 11. We carry plus sizes. We carry $20 dresses. Is that our whole inventory? No, but we do our best to make sure we have items like that. That’s just who we are.

You can find us at 895 Whalley Ave in New Haven, CT’s bustling Westville neighborhood where we’ve resided since October 2018. Melissa, Victoria, and Molly spend time each week refreshing the shop with new inventory and designing on-trend shop displays. We draw inspiration from our friends around Westville, like the brilliant minds behind Lotta Studio, Pistachio Cafe, and Elm City Sounds.
